The company has officially acknowledged the existence of "NameTag"—an internal, highly advanced facial recognition feature built directly into the software ecosystem of Meta’s smart glasses.

The Hidden Code and the PR Backlash

The controversy erupted after an investigative report exposed that the functional AI code for NameTag was silently living in a latent, dormant state inside the standard Meta AI mobile app. This app is actively installed on more than 50 million smartphones globally.
